The Man With Two Daughters

By Michael English

Summary: A dramatisation of the Parable of the Man With Two Sons.

Bible Reference: Matthew 21:28-32

Characters: Sammy, Suzie, their father Rob, Narrator

Props: Telephone, telephone ringing sound effect - or get the audience to shout "Ring, ring" at the right moment

Setting: An ordinairy house

Narrator: Once upon a time there was a man who had two daughters. The elder called Suzie, the younger called Sammy. The two girls always tried to do what was right, but sometimes didn't succeed. One day when their father came downstairs for breakfast he was very cross.

Rob: I've just seen the state of your rooms. They are a disgrace. How can you find anything in those pig sties I'll never know. Make certain you have them tidied up by the time I get home from work.

Sammy & Suzie: Do we have to.

Suzie: But I've got homework to do.

Sammy: And I've got music practice.

Rob: Yes you do have to. And you don't have to miss homework or music practice. You can tidy your rooms before tea instead of watching TV or dossing about, or whatever it is you do.

Narrator: Sammy grudgingly agreed.

Sammy: OK, I'll tidy my room if it will keep you happy.

Narrator: But Suzie refused to listen.

Suzie: But Dad, Neighbours is so brilliant. I would die if I missed today's episode.

Rob: I don't care. Make certain your room is tidy by the time I get home from work or you'll have no pocket money this week.

Narrator: So the father left for work and the two girls went to school.

Later that afternoon Sammy and Suzie had just got in from school.

Suzie: I suppose I'd better tidy my room. But I don't want to miss Neighbours. I wish doing what was right wasn't so difficult.

Narrator: So she went upstairs and started work. Sammy was about to follow her when the phone rang (Sound effect)

Sammy: (Answering phone) Hello Trudy. Yes I'd love to come to tea. No, I'm not doing anything else. I suppose I ought to tidy my room but I can do that another time.

(She replaces the phone and leaves).

Narrator: So which of the two girls did what their father wanted? Which one will he be pleased with? Suzie who said "No" at first, but then tidied her room, or Sammy who said "Yes", but then went out whilst her room was still a mess.
